James Hardie makes its board in climate-specific lines. HZ5 is formulated for cold, freeze-thaw regions. HZ10 is the one engineered for the Deep South - built to withstand blistering heat, heavy rainfall, humidity and gale-force storm winds. Houston and Kingwood are HZ10 country. Here is the part that matters: once the siding is on the wall, you cannot tell HZ10 from HZ5 by looking at it - but installing the wrong regional product can actually be a condition that affects your warranty coverage. Is fiber cement siding worth the extra cost over vinyl?
In this climate, for most homes, yes. Vinyl costs less upfront and we will install it if that is the right call for your budget. But fiber cement resists the rot, termites, heat and storm damage that shorten the life of vinyl and wood here, holds its color far longer, and is non-combustible. It also tends to return a strong share of its cost at resale, which is why it is consistently one of the highest-return exterior projects.
What is HZ10 and why does it matter in Kingwood?
James Hardie engineers its siding by climate zone. HZ10 is the product line built for the hot, humid, storm-exposed Deep South, which is exactly where Houston and Kingwood sit. The colder-climate HZ5 line looks identical once installed but is formulated differently, and using the wrong regional product can affect warranty coverage. Can you repair my siding instead of replacing all of it?

Do you replace siding along with a roof or windows?

Does fiber cement come pre-finished, or do you paint it?
